Ask Peter: Adult Acne Care

Being a teenager is definitely something that we would all love to go back to, at least for one day. Everyone who says otherwise lies! Can you imagine a time when the biggest problems were your math tests and acne? Well, some might experience the latter even now, and having adult acne is certainly a nerve-wrecking issue. It seems that no matter what you do, there are always there, so what are the small things you can do in order to restore the freshness and smoothness of your face? This Ask Peter issue will focus on the problems that all of us had at least once in our lifetimes (some of us could write a master’s thesis on the topic), so if you have any questions, fire them away in the comments section!

The food you eat matters a lot

The thing that I learned the hard way is that whatever you eat will show on your face. Before I started hitting the gym regularly and thus paying attention to what I eat (because of my abs), I used to be a great fan of everything fast food. We’re talking McDonald’s, KFC, French fries… you name it. However, if your diet is rich in carbohydrates, you are more likely to end up with breakouts. The best food to eat would be fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants – dark berries, tomatoes, beetroot and grapes. Once I incorporated them in my diet, I really saw the difference. Another thing that I had to pay attention to was cutting down on the amount of juices and sodas, and I replaced them all with water. It’s very important to stay hydrated as it makes your skin keep its elasticity, health and moisture.

The importance of skincare products

Obviously, apart from paying attention to what you eat, you need to mind your skincare routine. Not only do you have to worry about cleansing, moisturizing and exfoliating properly and regularly, but bear in mind that the quality of the goods you use matters a lot. Since not all products are made for all skin types, it would be good to go to the dermatologist just to see if there’s anything that your skin is allergic to or simply doesn’t respond well to. There are also some amazing acne skin care products on the market that are not that high-end yet are made out of the best ingredients that will definitely help you out. It’s good to improvise and look for new products, but beware of the ingredients – some might not be good for your particular skin type.

In-salon treatments are great

Let me tell you something – I’ve always found it fascinating how men don’t want to talk about getting in-salon facial treatments and facials, even though it might help them a lot. The situation has certainly changed in the last few years, so you shouldn’t feel shy about paying a visit to your nearest salon. Apart from relaxing and taking your mind off, you will get so solve certain issues with your face. Look for the best salons in your area and book your appointment.

Ask for help

Finally, never be afraid to ask for help. You need to know that buying your own skincare products and booking salon treatments is not the same as going to the dermatologist. If you’re experiencing any issues with your face, even after trying out many different things, it would be wise to ask for help from a professional. They will conduct certain tests and will tell you exactly what you need and what ingredients you’re not reacting well to. Don’t think that the people who work in the salon know as much as dermatologists do – learn something from my mistakes!

Having issues with acne in your adulthood is extremely nerve-wracking and can be quite a nuisance. You can always try different types of home remedies in order to rude your acne scars or acne, but what if this doesn’t work? If this is the case with you, then pay attention to all of the things listed above, and something will help you out. You might now be able to completely get rid of them just yet, but you will hopefully make your whole face situation much better.
