Makeup Tips: How to Find a Perfect Lipstick

Do you often feel overwhelmed when staring at the shelves with lipsticks? Finding the right shade for you is truly a chore, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for. There are certain colours that look stunning on some people, but definitely don’t fit others. Sometimes, the secret is in skin tone, other times it’s your teeth! So, how can you find a lipstick shade that fits you perfectly?

Find your undertone

Every person’s skin has either yellow or pink undertones and knowing which one is yours can seriously help you find your perfect lipstick. For instance, yellow undertones are considered warmer, while the pink ones tend to seem cool. If you can’t figure out which undertones hide in your skin, try looking at the veins on your wrist. Bluish veins mean pink undertones, while green means warmer yellow undertones. If you’re lucky, your veins will be both blue and green, which means you have a neutral skin tone that matches any colour. In case the vein trick doesn’t help, go grab a piece of gold and a piece of silver jewellery and see which one looks better on your skin (be objective, though). If you think silver is your match, you probably have cooler pink undertones, while yellow skin tones go better with gold.

Match your undertone with a colour

Now that you’ve found your undertone, choose a shade of lipstick that is similar to it. As an example, you can stick to warm colours if you have warm undertones. On the other hand, look for shades that have blue or purple tones if you have cool undertones. Experts recommend staying away from lipstick colours with grey and overly pale tones. Unless you really know how to wear them, they can easily give you that unflattering, sickly look. Yikes!

When in doubt, turn to your skin tones

If the whole undertones story doesn’t add up in your head, stick to those lipstick shades that suit your skin tone. For instance, olive skin is usually considered neutral, which means it’s very hard for you to choose wrong. Pinks, oranges, reds and nudes all look great on you.

Also, in order to pick the right one for the occasion, match your makeup with your outfit. If you’re wearing warm colours, pick a warm and bright lipstick and vice versa. If you have fair skin, as long as you stay away from the colours that are too light or with too much yellow undertone, you’ll look stunning. Think reds and other deep colours. On the other hand, deep plums, berries and deep reds look amazing on darker skin. However, you can avoid anything too light and pale—deeper shades look much more natural on you!

Don’t forget about the size of your lips

The shape and size of your lips can also determine your perfect lipstick shade. For instance, if you want to make your lips seem fuller, look for peaches, clear oranges and pale pinks. They enhance the lip and give them the illusion of fullness. Unfortunately, they will not exactly enlarge your lips. The only way to achieve the real smackable lip effect is to have a professional lip augmentation that will give you that lush and attractive lip look. Plus, this treatment is also great for removing those ugly wrinkles around the mouth. It’s truly a win-win procedure! On the other hand, if you want to make your lips appear smaller, stay away from lip gloss. Matter shades of red, brown and berry should be your number one choice.

Your teeth are also important

Not all of us can have those perfect Hollywood pearly whites. Luckily, there are some lip colours that can help you make your teeth look shiny and white. For instance, lipsticks with blue and cool undertones help yellow teeth look whiter. Experts usually recommend reds, mauves and taupes for instant teeth whitening. All in all, as long as your lipstick’s undertones aren’t warm and yellowish, they won’t sabotage the way your teeth look.

However, makeup is not an exact science and rules are there to be broken. If you adore a bright orange lipstick, disregard the whole tone and undertone story and go for it. As long something makes you feel happy and good about yourself, don’t hesitate to wear it, no matter what makeup artists, your friends and anyone else say!
