Product Review: Bumble and Bumble ‘The Straight Line’

I do believe I am living in the wrong decade. If it was the 1980’s, I would be the most popular girl with the biggest hair around. No teasing or hairspray needed for my natural curly hair. If your hair is anything like mine, it is most likely thick, course, curly, unruly, big, frizzy, and dry.

Here is my before and after of using Bumble and Bumble “The Straight Line” products.

Before and After

I have always wanted straight hair, but when you are not born with it, you must improvise. I had been reading a lot of reviews on Bumble and Bumble Straight Shampoo, Conditioner, and Blow Dry balm. I know these products are being carried in salons everywhere, so I thought I would give them a try.

If you buy the shampoo, conditioner, & blow dry at the actual Bumble and Bumble website, they are costly = $95 value. For a discounted price, go here

  • Straight Shampoo: $31
This sulfate-free cleanser starts hair smooth, reduces frizz and makes hair more manageable straight out of the shower
  • Straight Conditioner: $34
This conditioner helps manage unruly types, calm curls and quiet frizz for smoother, silkier texture. Adds shine and encourages body and movement.
  • Straight Blow Dry: $30
This heat protective styling balm makes short work of smoothing and straightening. Keeps styles sleek, smooth, and frizzless for up to 3 days.

The line is expensive, so I decided to buy the products on eBay () instead. I bought the set of all 3 for $59.95. I basically got the blow dry balm for free, by going this route instead and saved $30. Or you could say I got them for $20 each if you look at it that way. What is also great is that the seller through in a travel size blow dry balm for free. I would highly suggest buying through eBay instead of through a manufacturer, as you get more for your money!

Bumble and Bumble Straight

The best way to describe the smell of the shampoo and conditioner is “salon.”

Here are my Pros and Cons of using the product:

  • Smooth, Soft, & Silky: When used in combination together (all 3 products), they are all working as a unit to make your hair soft and smooth. I felt like I had Jennifer Aniston celebrity hair after I had used the products, after blow drying, and flat ironing my hair.
  • For Best Results = Use all 3 Bumble and Bumble Products Together: I did find that when I used the Blow Dry balm with a different shampoo and conditioner (I used Alba Botanica conditioner and SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex shampoo), it did not have the same effect, as with using all Bumble and Bumble products together. My hair wasn’t as soft, it was puffier, and it took more time to blow dry and flat iron.

  • Lather: When I shampooed and conditioned my hair with them, I did not really feel they lathered very well. The second time I used them, they did lather better, but I believe that was because I had already used them, so my hair was used to the product.
  • Small Bottle Size: I have a lot of hair and it is long, so I tend to naturally want to use a lot of the cream. However, these bottles are rather small for $30 or even $20. I was disappointed with the size of the bottles, which made me feel like it was hard to successfully use the amount of cream that I really wanted to. I really wanted to use more than I had, but since I just bought them, I did not want to use too much and kick myself for doing so. When reading some other reviews of the amount of cream needed, some reviewers said that it stretched and all you need is a quarter size. That is certainly not true, I could have used a whole palm full of the cream.
  • Price: The price for such a small bottle is rather obnoxious. I understand that these are “salon” quality, but I feel you should be getting much for bang for your buck.

What I want women to know is that this is not a miracle cure for your curly hair. Does it work? Yes it does, but it does take work. Your hair is NOT going to miraculously be celebrity or salon ready hair, once you use all three products. You have to put the work into blow drying your hair and flat ironing. After blow drying my hair, don’t get me wrong, it was big, but it was soft. If you do not flat iron your hair, you will be disappointed because your hair will still be puffy. Did I feel like using the Blow Dry balm cut down on my blow dry and flat iron time? Yes, but it always takes me awhile (I did not record how long it took, but it was a shorter amount of time).

Here is my hair after using the shampoo, conditioner, and blow dry balm. I flat ironed part of it, so that you could see the puffiness of my hair after blow drying with the Blow Dry balm. Like I mentioned above, your hair will still be big until you flat iron it (see below).

The tools (below) that I use for styling my hair are not cheap, so I would invest in high quality stylers.

  • Keratin Complex flat iron – $200
  • Ultra Chi Hair Dryer (Low EMF) – $80
  • Ionic, antibacterial, and static free round brush

I did feel like the way I used my round brush when blow drying, did have an effect on my hair. When I put my hair underneath the brush, I did find that my hair was smoother (first pic). When I used the round brush and put the hair over top of it, it was frizzy and puffy (2nd pic).

Round Brush Technique

Due to the cost, small size of the bottles, and that the blow dry balm really doesn’t work as well with other shampoo and conditioners (not in the Bumble and Bumble line), that is how and why I rated this product with the score. Although there were “cons” to this product, I did feel pretty afterward and I did feel they work, so I would recommend them still.
