Alexander McQueen Dead: 2010 Suicide

Finding the 40 year old fashion mogul dead this year and by choice no less, is truly a bizarre find! In February of this year, iconic fashion designer, Alexander McQueen was found dead by suicide. According to the Huffington Post, McQueen had hanged himself in his apartment, leaving a note nearby. He had also supposedly left suicide notes to explain his actions to his friends. Why would someone as successful as himself want to end his own life? This is a good question and it may come with several different answers.

It is reported that the woman who initially found him (Isabella Blow) had killed herself in 2007 after 5456389583_5b1c51c7e6finding out she had cancer. She and McQueen were very close and maybe this was one of the reasons? Living without the one who made you what you are today might have something to do with it. The Huffington Post reported that days before his death, he had told Harper’s Bazaar Australia that he was in the middle of a bad breakup with a guy whose name he had gotten tattoed on his arm. He called him “a bastard who went back to Australia and I was left looking at his name.”

Also, his mother had just died recently and in an interview with her, he indicated that his biggest fear was dying before her. Well, he did indeed die after her and losing her could have been the icing on the cake. On Twitter, he tweeted “Sunday evening been a ****ing awful week but my friends have been great but now i have to some how pull myself together and finish with the HELLS ANGLES & PROLIFIC DEAMONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The moral of the story is that looks can be deceiving. Just because you have a high profile career, success, money, and fame, it doesn’t mean that you are at all happy. With these characteristics come pressure, stress, guilt, etc. People know the name you created, but not who the “real you” is. You essentially become the product that you initially set out to sell. Alexander’s fashion looks can be described as beautiful, romantic, sophisticated, contemporary, creative, and theatrical.

Was the news of Alexander’s death shocking? Well, some of his friends weren’t at all shocked and one told the Independent UK that “McQueen was saying he wasn’t interested in fashion anymore, that he hated it (while saying this in a professional meeting). He wasn’t interested and seemed to be declaring he was over fashion.”

You and I may think to ourselves…how could this be true? How could he be over fashion! Did he just drive himself too hard and too fast? How could he burn himself out only at the age of 40? The sad part is that he was unveiling his McQ collection on Thursday, February 11 – the very day he died.
